WTI just pushed to around $94 a barrel — a three-month high — on supply-disruption worries. If you trade oil, or if oil moves your energy stocks, your currency pair, or your inflation view, you already know the annoying part: crude does most of its damage while you're asleep or in a meeting.
Here's how to stop refreshing the chart and get pinged instead.
Why broker alerts keep failing you
Most oil traders set alerts inside their broker platform. Three things go wrong:
- The alert lives inside the app. Close the app, log out, or switch devices, and it silently stops mattering.
- It only handles one condition. "WTI above 96" is a single line. Real trading questions are rarely single lines.
- It pushes to a notification tray you already ignore.
Set the condition, not the price
A price alert tells you a number was touched. A condition tells you your thesis is under pressure. The difference matters most in oil, because crude is almost never a standalone story — it's a supply story, a dollar story, or an inflation story.
Three conditions worth setting right now:
WTI > 96 OR WTI < 88 — the breakout/breakdown fence. Either leg fires, the three-month-high move has resolved one way or the other and you go look. Neither fires, you don't open a chart all day.
WTI > 96 AND EURUSD < 1.15 — this is the one a broker alert physically cannot express. Oil up and the dollar strengthening at the same time is the stagflation-flavoured combination: energy costs rising into a tightening dollar. One ping, one specific meaning.
WTI > 96 AND XAU > 4,400 — crude and gold rising together is the inflation-hedge bid, not a one-off supply headline.
How to set it up in about two minutes
- Go to doneroad.com — it runs in the browser, nothing to download and no broker account to connect.
- Pick your asset. Oil (WTI and Brent) sits alongside crypto, stocks, forex and precious metals, so you can build cross-market conditions.
- Write the rule. Choose your conditions and chain them with AND / OR. DoneRoad shows you a plain-English preview of exactly what you built — "Notify me when WTI is above 96 and EUR/USD is below 1.15" — so you can't accidentally set the opposite of what you meant.
- Choose Telegram, email, or both. Telegram is the one people actually read.
- Save. That's it — the alert runs on our side, not in your browser tab, so it fires whether or not your laptop is open.
One rule that makes alerts useful
Set the level where you're wrong, not the level you're hoping for. If you can't answer "what do I do when this fires?" in one sentence, don't set it — you're just building a notification you'll swipe away.
